Anya’s Story
"They were a tremendous, reassuring and calm help to us."
Anya Mitchell shared with us the story of the care her mum received at home from the Priscilla Bacon Lodge team:
“My mum, Barbara Stevenson, was 98 when she died in 2018. Fiercely independent, a former Lord Mayor of Norwich, who was used to helping others rather than accepting help for herself, she finally agreed to move in with me and my husband in 2017.
She developed a severe chest infection about a month before she died, and didn’t respond well to treatment. Our GP, thinking her demise was imminent, arranged for Priscilla Bacon Lodge’s highly trained and experienced carers to visit every day until her death, which was expected to be 2 or 3 days.
Mum responded very well to ‘her ladies’, and would happily chat with them while they dealt with all her personal care. She accepted their help much more readily than mine, (after all, I was her child!)
Mum lived for another month, and those wonderful carers came every day until the day she died. They were a tremendous, reassuring and calm help to us. One lady even stayed overnight, so I could catch up on some sleep.
We will always be grateful for this fantastic support, and in return we do a little fundraising whenever we can. In December, we held a coffee morning and Christmas raffle in our village hall, as we know every little helps.”
